The Sanitation and Health: Public Health Education course was designed to provide health care providers the information that they need to better understand the link between inadequate wastewater sanitation and the potential associated health outcomes. In the module we will discuss the risk of intestinal parasitic infections due to the lack of adequate wastewater sanitation in the Black Belt region of Alabama, the symptoms associated with soil-transmitted helminth infections, diagnostic considerations, and recommended treatments.

  • List poor health outcomes linked to poor sanitation
  • Identify STH
  • Recognize the status of water and wastewater management in the Black Belt
  • Identify risk factors
  • Recognize parasite testing and diagnostic codes
  • Recognize limitations of parasite testing
  • Identify symptoms, testing and treatment for specific parasites
