Course Description

Telehealth Essentials for Registered Nurses educates nurses and nursing students on best practices to plan and implement population-based telehealth interprofessional collaborative practice interventions for individuals, families, and communities. The purpose of the Telehealth Essentials for Registered Nurses Course is to prepare nurses to improve access to public health primary care services using telehealth technology. The foundational underpinnings for this course are based on the American Academy of Ambulatory Care Nursing, Scope and Standards of Practice for Professional Ambulatory Care Nursing; the American Academy of Ambulatory Care Nursing, Scope and Standards of Practice for Professional Telehealth Nursing; and the Interprofessional Education Collaborative, Core Competencies for Interprofessional Collaborative Practice. Building health care systems to increase access to care and improve health outcomes in rural and medically underserved areas will require an understanding of the role social determinants of health play on individual and community health, the effective use of telehealth technologies, and the deployment of collaborative interprofessional teams. The overarching course goals are to enhance existing skill sets and prepare professional nurses in the delivery, management, and coordination of primary care telehealth services.
