POTA is the FIRST community-based interprofessional training initiative aimed to build community’s capacity to improve access and quality of psychosocial cancer care. POTA offers interactive workshops designed for mental health and primary care professionals serving patients in the Greater Birmingham area and beyond.

POTA SOM201 course offers 1 online, self-paced module that is comprised of 6 bite-size videos and an open access resource platform to enhance clinical competency and referral networks that best support breast cancer survivors and their families. Participants can earn up to 1.0 CME/CE credits at the completion of the course.

Breast Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment Course Objectives:
  • List methods used to diagnose cancer
  • Identify three most common types of breast cancer treatments
  • Summarize how treatments are chosen based off the characteristics of breast cancer
Common Psychosocial Effects and Pharmacological Considerations Course Objectives:
  • Describe common psychosocial side effects of breast cancer diagnosis and treatments
  • Examine psychological and pharmacological considerations in treating depression and chemo brain
  • Discuss potential drug interactions in breast cancer that may impact psychosocial and cognitive symptom management
Common Physical Side Effects of Breast Cancer Course Objectives:
  • Describe common toxicities associated with chemotherapy, targeted therapies, and hormonal therapy and impact on patient outcomes
  • Identify common acute and chronic side effects from radiation therapy
  • Discuss common side effects associated with breast cancer surgery and impact on patient outcomes
Financial Toxicity: Financial Impact of Cancer Course Objectives:
  • Define financial toxicity
  • Recognize sources of financial burden on cancer patients
  • Identify the three domains of financial toxicity
  • Apply strategies to address patients’ financial needs
Breast Cancer Survivorship Course Objectives:
  • Define key domains of breast cancer survivorship
  • Discuss recommendations on best practice in managing breast cancer survivorship care
  • Apply local and national resources to support breast cancer surveillance, long-term effect assessment and health promotion
