Scientific Writing and Communication will help Scholars develop and strengthen professional writing and speaking skills. Offered by the UAB Graduate School, this course will provide hands-on practical experience for Scholars. For writing skills, Scholars will receive training on summary/abstract writing, experiment-based report writing, writing of proposals and critical reviews, incorporating visual aids in texts, ethical practices related to writing and publication, and appropriate use of secondary sources. The course will also help Scholars acquire rhetorical strategies needed in assessing writing needs, identifying disciplinary discourse expectations, and writing effectively for different audiences and purposes. Topics on speaking skills will include basic principles of group dynamics, discussion techniques, public speaking skills, conversation management within an academic context, conversation repairs, register shifting, and fluency and overall comprehensibility.

To obtain practical skills to be applied when submitting manuscripts to peer-reviewed journals

To provide a structured forum for developing a scientific poster in a systematic fashion

To provide a thorough understanding of advanced scientific writing through a series of lectures, exercises, presentation, peer-reviewed projects, and group work
